Being an Asian American my work has elements from different cultures, especially Chinese films and Chinese culture. The films of Stephen Chow, a Hong Kong filmmaker, actor, and producer were an important part of my childhood. I am not sure if his movies unconsciously influenced my art style, but I want to say that it influenced me somehow. The style of movie Stephen Chow made famous is called, "Mo lei tau," a Cantonese term that may be loosely translated as "with no source", but is generally used to mean "makes no sense". These films are both serious and funny, and their influence has led me to include elements of thematic and formal contrasts in my paintings to convey complex emotions. They are my interpretations of a man’s feelings, transitioning into adulthood, of vulnerability, sorrow and confusion, all done with a satirical view of the gender role of men, particularly Asian men, in society.
