I combine real emotion through color and storytelling with my painted characters' large eyes resembling portals; perhaps the wall between Anime and reality isn't too far off. In my practice, I use an aesthetic of cuteness to connect to the agency of my childhood self and tackle the traumas of that age in my artwork. The art of cuteness is defined as a style that emphasizes bright colors and characters with a childlike appearance. I reference the forced maturity at a young age due to institutional racism and patriarchy, and the multifaceted difficulties faced with being a black woman in a world that seems far away. In my visual style I wish to bring that imaginary image of childhood to appear as more complex and real than simple fantasy.
