Erin Bergmann

My sculptural work conflates the human figure with abstraction, dabbling in the idea of the uncanny. I use casts of fragmented body parts, often adding grotesque forms, altering surfaces, and placing the objects in an imagined world of my own creation.

As a former ballet and modern dancer, movement and gesture are pillars of my work. Human bodies and movement hold equal aesthetic and symbolic value for me.

In my venture into visual art, I’ve been most inspired by Sarah Lucas, David Altmejd, Louise Bourgeois, and Yayoi Kusama.

I know interpretation varies and my own intended meaning may never connect with others- although, I do hope for a visceral reaction.

I aim for a quick laugh with a tinge of discomfort out of my viewer, all while processing my own trauma.

It’s hard for me to assign one meaning to my work. I believe in multiplicity.

I have fragmented i d e a s .

More logically expressed through images than words.

I enjoy that ambiguity.

I act impulsively. I get dirty. I play music. I don’t clean until everything is finished.

Nothing is ever finished.
