Alaina Rodriquez

My works for my thesis carry a cinematic quality, focusing on narrative and world-building. The pieces range in size depending on the medium—typically oil paint or mixed media—including paint markers, pencils and pens. I have always pushed contrast and held an obvious composition with a distinct foreground, middle ground, and background. I am exploring a wide use of color and its vibrancy in the current pieces, with certain color palettes and choices conveying intentional moods and emotions. The different media have begun to influence one another in terms of mark-making, layering, and exploration of color. I’ve begun stretching and testing new ways of creating work with these different media and playing with my levels of detail. My current work often contains figures and portraits, and I’m pushing for a deeper narrative, as well, to interlace symbolism in the guise of “Easter eggs” paced throughout the pieces, leaving the viewer peering in just a bit longer.
