The painting series for my thesis is an exploration into the subconscious of Black fem figures who exist within dark, contained spaces. All the pieces in the show include one or more windows that look out to a surreal, dreamlike, or nightmarish environment. The paintings reflect my mind and environment, as well as the topics currently affecting my community. The imagery I create tends to have colors that are toned down, giving it a dark and gloomy aesthetic. Every piece has a pop of bright color for lighting to reflect on the figure inspired by Baroque era painter Caravaggio, who often used the chiaroscuro technique. Mental health, spirituality, and healing are all important to me. From my perspective, one step toward healing is delving into subconscious fears, dreams, and memories. Representing Black, fem and/or queer folk in my art is my way of giving space for these fears, dreams and internal thoughts of the collective to live on these wooden panels and canvases. “Oh my Bosch, I’m Dreaming” is an example of one of these spaces, where the figure lives within their mind as a nightmare occurs outside the window. Black lives, Black women, and LGBTQ+ Black lives matter and deserve space in this world to live, thrive and exist peacefully—not constantly live in fight or flight mode. This is why I make the art I create and will continue for years to come.
