My concern with environmental issues is the primary focus of my sculpture. The goal of my practice is to bring the outside in, as I closely observe, gather and work with natural materials to establish a sustainable way of making. Basic gardening and agricultural practices—including composting, gathering, seed collecting, harvesting, preserving and drying—inform my work. My process is also characterized by play and experimentation, recalling my childhood: making mud-pies, collecting wildflowers and building structures out of sticks. I feel a deep connection to the land, taking only what I need and giving back the rest. With that, it’s important to acknowledge the temporality of the materials I use and the meditative process involving repetitive movements and long stretches of time, all informed by a Buddhist sense of detachment and impermanence.
