Juliet Miller

The ideas underpinning my work revolve around feelings of nostalgia, longing and loss. My paintings draw from memories, friends and family and human interactions. This keeps my work very personal and helps me to feel a deeper connection to my subject.

The nature of the corporeal body can be fascinating, but also disturbing. I am interested in the process of the decay of something that was once living. The beauty in the cycle of the human body is something that I want to emphasize in my work. Photographs are meant to capture a moment and the feelings within that moment, but through time, these memories are eventually lost. I try and cling to the past so that I do not lose those memories that were once so important to me at the time. This juxtaposition between time and memory represents the physical body versus the psyche; how these components amalgamate to capture the existence of humans within nature.

My work can also be viewed as a struggle with one’s identity, based on the distortion of the subject matter and the constant reference to the past. Working with oil on glass and canvas while paint is layered, scraped and scratched away, creating a surface that alludes to the wear of the body, is a very important attribute of my work. The contrast between the worked painted surface and smooth, transparent and fragile glass ground highlights a sense of fragility. Using glass as a primary material plays an important role in how the piece can be perceived. Due to the underpainting, viewing the pieces from the back of the glass offers an entirely different reading. The double-sided nature of the painted object allows for the possibility to literally see what lies beneath the surface; creating a psychological space comprised of multi-layer experiences.want to launch a business.
