Isabella Malossini
My sculptures for thesis reference fertility goddess statues and early representations of women.
My works echo their simple forms and frontal, symmetrical poses. The simplicity of these archaic works speak to their direct spiritual meaning, and I think of my works as being like altarpieces. To that end, my works are rendered “naturalistically”, in a direct formal manner absent excessive detail. The use of clay is also important and symbolic. It is a material directly derived from the earth. It has healing powers and, like no other material, speaks to all of my influences. In referencing these archaic sources in combination with naturalistic form-making, I hope to represent, in a contemporary context, the divinity and power of the female body, and to invite those not aware to begin to understand.
